Today, Arabic calligraphers are becoming very scarce, in a world dominated by electronic arts and media. As most today's digital arts were developed in the west, there are more and more challenges that face the Arabic calligraphy. Very few, if any, computer applications are designed to help developping the Arabic calligraphy and conserve its uniqueness compared to the Latin typo. One little exception that I'm aware of is a software called "Kelk" by SinaSoft(www.kelk.ws) which is basically an Arabic calligraphy software that allows you to compose Arabic words and designs in several Arabic calligraphy styles.

Teach Yourself Arabic Calligraphy: Five Scripts
pages: 159 / Arabic / pdf /5 MB

The book offers an introduction to all the major styles of calligraphy present in in the Arab east: Naskh, Thuluth, Ruq'a, Nasta'liq, Diwani... Unfortunately, no Maghrebi scripts represented, and no Kufic either.

Those scripts are Ottoman and post-Ottoman in nature, so people studying Ottoman (and to some extent Persian, because of Nasta'liq) can profit from the book. However, all the instructions are in Arabic, including the beautiful Diwani example sentences in the back.

Aspects of Clause Structure in Standard Arabic:
A Study in Relational Grammar

1985 / pages: 321 / PDF /Size: 5,20MB

The present study aims at examining aspects of the clause structure in Standard Arabic (SA); specifically, those clauses which involve and are relevant to "double accusatives". Double accusatives denote clausal structures having two nominais marked for the accusative case. Linguists like Wright (1974) and Comrie (1976) make the strong claim that SA tolerates "double direct object" constructions. Accord- ingly, such constructions violate a universal posited in the linguistic theory of Relational Grammar (RG), the Stratal Uniqueness Law which states that no more than one nominal can bear a given grammatical re- lation like direct object in a single level of structure

A Programmed Course in Modern Literary Arabic Phonology Script

[A+Programmed+Course+in+Modern+Literary+Arabic+Phonology+and+Script.jpg]

Programmed Course in Modern Literary Arabic Phonology Script

A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. This course is designed to teach the non-Arabic speaker to read printed Arabic, to write Arabic with "a pleasing hand," to distinguish accurately the phonological contrasts of modern literary Arabic, and to pronounce it in a manner easily comprehensible to Arabs. Dialogs and proverbs are included for reading practice; grammatical structures are not dealt with. The course may serve as an introduction to, or be used concurrently with, a basic course. Typical lessons present a set of letters related in form, plus certain auxiliary signs. For each letter or sign there are three sections: (1) its pronunciation value, with explanations and drills if it differs from or is lacking in English; (2) the various shapes of this letter in its printed form and drills in reading it; and (3) the written forms of the letter, also with practice drills. At the end of each unit there are review drills for the unit as a whole. The material is presented usually one small feature at a time, and the student proceeds at his own rate. Pronunciation features are recorded on tape as well as described phonetically. Answers to oral drills are on tape; written answers are given in the left margin of the following page.
